Car AC
Car A/C Blowing Warm Air
A car AC that blows warm air usually has low refrigerant from a leak, a compressor that is not engaging, or a part that is not shedding heat, such as the condenser or its fan. Weak air that is still cold is a different problem: the blower or the cabin air filter. When it happens narrows the cause.

What each pattern points to
Match what you notice to the likely cause.
- Warm air all the time. Low refrigerant is a common reason. Refrigerant is not used up, so low means it has leaked out.
- Warm air and no change when you switch the AC on. The compressor or its clutch may not be engaging. A blown fuse or relay can also stop it from running.
- Cold while driving, warm at a stop. A condenser fan that does not run, or a blocked condenser, cannot shed heat when the car is not moving.
- Warm on one side and cold on the other. On cars with separate temperature settings, this can point to a blend door fault.
- Cold air, but very little of it. That is an airflow problem: a failing blower motor or a clogged cabin air filter.
What if it is cold only sometimes?
An AC that cools and then stops can have a part that is failing or a slow leak. Note when it happens, such as after a long drive, only in heat or only at idle, and say so when you call.
Is it safe to drive with warm AC?
A warm AC on its own is not a safety problem, and the car can be driven. If grinding or squealing starts when the AC is on, or you smell burning, turn the AC off.
Having it diagnosed
Call or text and describe the problem. The diagnostic visit is $125 on every job and is credited toward the repair if you go ahead with it. Without the repair, the $125 is not refunded. Travel is $75 to $100 in addition to the diagnostic, depending on miles and fuel.
What to do right now
Note when it happens.
All the time, only at a stop, only in heat or only on one side.
Check the airflow.
Cold but weak air points to the blower or the filter, not the cooling side.
Skip the refrigerant can for now.
It adds refrigerant to a system that may be leaking, and an overfilled system can be damaged.
Call or text.
Say what the AC is doing and when.
Questions
Questions about car AC blowing warm air
Why is my car AC blowing hot air all of a sudden?
A sudden change often means a part failed rather than a slow leak: the compressor or its clutch, a blown fuse or relay, or the cooling fan. Cooling that fades over weeks more often points to a slow refrigerant leak.
Is my car AC just low on refrigerant?
It may be, but refrigerant is not used up, so low means it leaked out. Topping it off without fixing the leak means it can escape again. The diagnostic visit looks for the cause.
Why is my AC cold while driving but warm when I stop?
Often an airflow problem at the condenser. A cooling fan that does not run, or a blocked condenser, cannot shed heat at a stop. At speed, air moving through the front of the car does that work instead.
Can I use a refrigerant can from a parts store?
It adds refrigerant but does not fix a leak, and an overfilled system can be damaged. Having the cause found first avoids paying for refrigerant that escapes again.
