What mobile car AC repair includes

A car AC system is sealed. When it stops cooling, a part has usually failed or refrigerant has leaked out. The repair depends on which.

  • Looking for the cause. A diagnostic visit looks into why the air is warm or weak.
  • Leaks. Refrigerant can escape through hoses, seals, the condenser or other parts. Fixing a leak means replacing the part that leaks.
  • The compressor. It circulates the refrigerant. When it fails or will not engage, the AC stops cooling.
  • The condenser and cooling fan. They shed heat from the system. A damaged condenser or a fan that does not run can cause warm air.
  • Recharge. Refrigerant is added back once the cause is dealt with.
  • Blower and cabin air. Weak airflow can come from a failing blower motor or a clogged cabin air filter, not the cooling side at all.

Signs your car AC needs attention

  • Warm air from the vents. The system is running but not cooling.
  • Weak airflow. The air is cold but little comes out. That points to the blower or the filter.
  • Cold only sometimes. A system that cools and then stops can have a failing part or a slow leak.
  • A musty smell from the vents. Moisture in the system or a dirty cabin air filter.
  • Noise when the AC is on. A grinding or squealing that starts with the AC can point to the compressor or its belt.

Questions

Questions about car AC repair

Can a mobile mechanic fix car AC at my house?

Many AC repairs can be done in a driveway or a parking spot at work. Whether a particular repair can depends on the car and the part. Say what the AC is doing when you call or text.

Why is my car AC blowing warm air?

Common causes include low refrigerant from a leak, a compressor that is not engaging, a damaged condenser, a cooling fan that does not run or an electrical fault. The diagnostic visit looks for the cause.

Will a recharge fix my AC?

Only if low refrigerant was the problem, and refrigerant is not used up, so low normally means a leak. Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak means it can escape again.

Who is allowed to handle car AC refrigerant?

A technician who services car AC systems must hold an EPA Section 609 certification under federal rules, because the work involves handling refrigerant. The mechanic holds one.
