What mobile brake repair includes

Brake work is a common driveway repair. It needs a level place to work and room to take a wheel off.

  • Brake pads. The friction material that wears down and squeals when it is thin.
  • Rotors. The discs the pads clamp. They can wear unevenly, score or warp.
  • Calipers. The clamps that push the pads. They can stick or leak.
  • Brake fluid. It absorbs moisture over time and eventually needs to be replaced. Your owner's manual gives the interval.

Signs your brakes need attention

  • Squealing. Many pads have a small metal tab that squeals when the pad is nearly worn out.
  • Grinding. Usually the pad is worn through and metal is touching the rotor. The longer it goes, the more the rotor is damaged.
  • A pulsing pedal. Often an uneven or warped rotor.
  • The car pulls to one side when you brake. Often a stuck caliper or uneven wear.
  • A soft or sinking pedal. Air, a leak, or a failing master cylinder. Stop driving the car.
  • A red brake warning light. Check that the parking brake is fully released. If it stays on, especially with a soft pedal, stop driving and have it checked.

Questions

Questions about brake repair

Can a mobile mechanic replace brakes at my house?

Yes. Pads, rotors and calipers are common mobile repairs. They need a level place to work and room to take a wheel off, so a driveway or a parking spot at work usually suits.

Do I need to replace pads on both sides?

Yes. Pads are replaced in axle sets, both front or both rear, so braking stays even from side to side. A pad that wore much faster than its partner can point to a stuck caliper.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

Do not keep driving on it. Grinding usually means the pads are worn through and metal is touching the rotor, which damages the rotor and can reduce stopping power. If the pedal sinks or the car will not slow down, use the emergency steps above.

How do I know if I need new rotors or just pads?

You cannot tell from the sound alone. Whether rotors need replacing depends on their wear, scoring and thickness, which are measured with the pads off.
