What suspension and steering parts wear out
The suspension holds the car up and keeps the tires on the road. The steering points it where you want to go. Parts in both wear slowly, so the change is easy to miss until it gets bad.
- Struts and shocks. They control how the car bounces over bumps. Worn ones leave the car bouncy or floaty.
- Control arms and bushings. They hold the wheel in position. Worn bushings can cause clunks and wandering.
- Ball joints and tie rods. They let the wheel move and steer. Worn ones can make the steering loose.
- Sway bar links. A source of clunking over small bumps.
Signs your suspension or steering needs attention
- A clunk over bumps or when turning. Often a worn link, joint or bushing. The sound alone does not say which.
- The car keeps bouncing after a bump. Often worn struts or shocks.
- The nose dips hard when you brake. Often worn front struts or shocks.
- Uneven tire wear. Can point to worn suspension parts or a bad alignment.
- The steering feels loose or the car wanders. Often worn tie rods, ball joints or bushings. Do not drive it if the steering feels loose.

Questions
Questions about suspension and steering repair
What does a clunk over bumps mean?
Often a worn sway bar link, ball joint, bushing or strut mount. The sound alone does not say which. A clunk that comes with loose steering is more serious, and the car should not be driven.
Is it safe to drive with worn suspension?
Mildly worn shocks make the ride bouncy and can lengthen stopping distances. Have them looked at soon. Loose steering, wandering or a part that clunks and moves is different: stop driving, because a failed part can cost you control.
Why does my car pull to one side?
A pull to one side can come from uneven tire pressure, a stuck brake, worn suspension or steering parts, or wheel alignment that is off. Check tire pressure first, and have a pull that is new or getting worse looked at.
Should struts and shocks be replaced in pairs?
Usually, yes. Replacing both on the same axle keeps the ride and handling even from side to side, since one new and one worn unit behave differently. The vehicle matters, so check your owner's manual.
