Will a Mobile Mechanic Come to My Work, Apartment or HOA?

Mobile repair is done at your home or workplace, but whether a mechanic can work at a particular apartment, HOA community or job site depends on the rules there. Rules vary. Check your lease, HOA rules or employer policy, or ask the manager, before the visit.

Can a mobile mechanic work on my car at my apartment?

Maybe. Many apartment communities have rules about car repairs in parking areas. Some forbid them, some allow small jobs, and some have no rule at all. Your lease or the community rules should say, and the property manager can tell you.

This page is general information, not legal advice. It cannot tell you what your lease allows. Read it, or ask, before the visit.

Do I need permission from my landlord, HOA or employer?

If your lease, HOA rules or workplace policy cover car repairs or outside contractors on the property, follow them. If you cannot find anything, ask the landlord, the HOA board or manager, or your employer.

At work, the parking lot may belong to a landlord or a property company, not your employer. Your manager may know who to ask.

What should I ask the property manager?

  • Are car repairs allowed on the property? Some places allow only minor work or none at all.
  • Is a contractor allowed to work in the parking area? Some properties require notice or an approval first.
  • Is there a spot where it is allowed? A private garage or a space away from shared walkways may be treated differently from an open lot.
  • Are there rules about spills or leaks? Repairs can involve fluids, and many properties have a rule on cleanup.
  • Is there a time of day to avoid? Some communities limit noise or work hours.

What does the parking spot need to be like?

Level, firm ground, room to open the doors and to take a wheel off, and a place that is not in the way of other cars or walkways. A car on a slope or soft ground is a safety problem for any repair that lifts it. A tight spot between two cars can rule out a job that would work in a driveway.

What about spills and cleanup?

Some repairs, like cooling system work or brake fluid service, involve fluids. Used fluids should not go on the ground or down a storm drain. If your property has rules about spills, read them, and tell your property manager the repair involves fluids if the rules mention them.

What if the property says no?

Then the repair belongs somewhere else. You could move the car to a place where repairs are allowed, such as a friend's driveway, or take it to a shop. If the car is unsafe to drive, do not drive it.

Questions

Questions about repairs at work, apartments and HOAs

Can a mobile mechanic work in an apartment parking lot?

It depends on the apartment's rules. Some communities forbid repairs in the lot and some allow them. Check your lease or ask the property manager before the visit.

Can a mobile mechanic come to my workplace?

Yes. Repairs are done at your workplace. Whether a mechanic can work in your particular lot depends on your employer and whoever owns the property, so ask them first.

Do HOAs allow car repairs in the driveway?

Some do and some limit them. HOA rules vary a lot, so read your community's rules or ask the board or manager. Do not assume one HOA's rules apply to another.

What about fluid spills at my apartment?

Some repairs involve fluids, and many properties have cleanup rules. Check yours, and tell the mechanic about them before the visit. Ask the property manager what the rules say about spills and cleanup.

Checked the rules at your place?

Call or text and say what the car is doing and where it is parked.
