Mobile Fuel Pump and Fuel System Repair
A car that cranks but will not start, or sputters and loses power at speed, may not be getting enough fuel. Fuel pumps and other fuel system parts are replaced at your home or workplace, on all makes and models.
- All makes and models
- $125 diagnostic, credited if you go ahead with the repair
- Nephi to Ogden, including Eagle Mountain and Heber
What the fuel system does
The fuel system moves fuel from the tank to the engine at the right pressure. A fault anywhere along the way can stall the car or stop it starting.
- Fuel pump. It pushes fuel to the engine. On most modern cars it sits in or on the fuel tank.
- Fuel filter. It catches dirt. On many newer cars the filter is part of the in-tank pump assembly.
- Fuel injectors. They spray fuel into the engine. A clogged or failing one can cause a misfire.
- Fuel lines and fittings. They carry fuel. They can corrode, crack or leak.
Signs of a fuel system problem
- The engine cranks but will not start. Can mean no fuel is reaching the engine. Spark and other faults cause this too.
- Sputtering or loss of power at speed. Can be a fuel supply problem.
- Stalling or a rough idle. Can be fuel, ignition or sensors.
- A whine from the tank area. A pump that is wearing out can get loud.
- A smell of fuel, or fuel under the car. A leak. See the warning below.
What fuel system repair costs
A pump that is reached from under the rear seat is a smaller job than one that needs the tank lowered.
- Diagnostic
- $125On every job. Credited if you go ahead with the repair. Kept if you decline it.
- Travel
- $75 to $100Depends on distance and fuel. Charged in addition to the diagnostic.
- Repair
- By vehicle and laborThe price depends on your vehicle, the parts and the labor it needs.
Working around fuel
Fuel work means handling fuel and vapor, so it belongs on open, level ground away from flames and sparks. On some vehicles the fuel pump is reached from under the rear seat or an access panel, and on others the tank has to be lowered, which is a bigger job.
Questions
Questions about fuel system repair
Is it safe to drive with a fuel leak?
No. A fuel leak is a fire risk. If you smell fuel or see it dripping, do not start the engine, and keep flames and sparks away. If fuel is pooling, or there is smoke or fire, move well away and call 911.
How do I know if my fuel pump is failing?
A failing pump may whine, let the engine sputter at speed, or leave the car cranking without starting. Those signs also fit other faults, such as a clogged filter or an ignition problem, so none of them proves it is the pump.
Is the fuel filter part of the fuel pump?
On many newer cars, yes. The filter is built into the in-tank pump assembly, so replacing the pump replaces the filter with it. On older cars the filter is a separate part along the fuel line.
Can bad gas cause a car to stall?
Yes. Water or dirt in the fuel can cause sputtering, hesitation or stalling, and a clogged filter can do the same. If trouble started right after fueling up, mention the station and the date.
Smell fuel or a no-start in the driveway?
Call or text and say what the engine does or what you smell.
