What the ignition system does

The ignition system lights the fuel in each cylinder. When one part of it wears out, the engine can misfire, and you feel it as roughness or lost power.

  • Spark plugs. They wear over time. Your owner's manual gives the replacement interval.
  • Ignition coils. They make the spark. A weak coil can cause a misfire in one cylinder.
  • Plug wires. On engines that have them, they carry the spark and can wear out.
  • Related parts. A dirty air filter, a dirty throttle body or a failing sensor can cause similar symptoms.

Signs of a tune-up or ignition problem

  • A rough idle. The engine shakes or the RPM wanders when stopped.
  • Hesitation or stumbling when you accelerate. Can be a misfire.
  • Hard starting. Worn plugs or a failing coil can make the engine slow to start.
  • Worse fuel economy. A misfiring engine can waste fuel.
  • A check engine light. A misfire can set one.

What tune-up and ignition repair costs

Whether the job is plugs alone or coils too, and how easy they are to reach on your engine, shape what this repair costs.

Diagnostic
$125On every job. Credited if you go ahead with the repair. Kept if you decline it.
Travel
$75 to $100Depends on distance and fuel. Charged in addition to the diagnostic.
Repair
By vehicle and laborThe price depends on your vehicle, the parts and the labor it needs.

When it may not be the ignition

Plugs and coils are often easy to reach, but on some engines they sit under other parts and take more time. A rough-running car may not be an ignition problem at all, because fuel, air and sensor faults look the same. A long-running misfire can damage the catalytic converter.

Questions

Questions about tune-ups and ignition repair

What does a tune-up include on a modern car?

Most modern cars no longer need a classic tune-up. What remains is replacing parts that wear, mainly spark plugs, and sometimes coils and filters. Your owner's manual lists what your car needs and when.

How do I know if I need new spark plugs?

Rough idle, hesitation, hard starting and poor fuel economy are common signs, and so is a check engine light. Those symptoms also come from other faults, so worn plugs are one possibility, not a given.

Can one bad ignition coil cause a misfire?

Yes. Many engines have one coil per cylinder, and a weak coil can cause a misfire in just that cylinder. The engine runs rough and may set a check engine light, which flashes if the misfire is bad.

How often should spark plugs be replaced?

It depends on the engine and the plug type. Some plugs last far longer than others. Your owner's manual gives the interval for your car, so follow that rather than a general number.
